Innovations against heat stress: MobiGa and urban projects

Proactive measures for a better urban life

More and more cities and municipalities are turning to innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure the quality of life of their citizens in the face of climate change. Heat stress and extreme weather events are being mitigated by new approaches that improve both the urban environment and the well-being of the population.

Exemplary projects in German cities

In Jena, climate oases and pocket parks are being created, planted with ecologically valuable plants and promoting social interaction. Munich is creating temporary summer streets to gain additional green space. In Turin (Italy), park benches are being equipped with shade providers, while Vienna (Austria) is integrating misting systems for cooling in new construction projects.

Quick solutions with MobiGa

Many of these projects require long planning periods and extensive renovation work. However, MobiGa offers solutions that can be implemented at short notice. As a leading provider of mobile vertical gardens, MobiGa supports cities and municipalities in actively addressing the challenges of climate change. The gardens' innovative, solar-powered irrigation systems effectively contribute to cooling the air, reducing heat islands, and improving the urban microclimate. In addition, they enrich the cityscape and offer valuable oases of calm in everyday life.

Successful deployment in several cities

In Koblenz, two mobile gardens equipped with a high-pressure misting module will be located in the courtyard of City Hall Building II until mid-September 2024. With this unique mobile solution, the push of a button activates a fine mist spray, providing refreshing cooling. Hygienic safety is ensured by UV light sterilization and a flushing system specially developed for the MobiGa systems. Feedback from the population is crucial to the pilot project for mobile vertical gardens in Koblenz . Ideas on sustainability and mobility were collected in a pop-up youth parliament, with the MobiGa systems being highlighted as a particular highlight. The students report: "We also really liked going to the courtyard of the town hall and trying out a bench that had a vertical garden and a spray mist cooling function. We all really liked this bench and it might even be seen in some schoolyards here in Koblenz soon. Because we all voted for it."

Other areas of application

The Superblock Project on Augustenstraße in Stuttgart is an ambitious urban development project that aims to redesign public space. MobiGa's mobile vertical gardens are part of this initiative, which aims to reduce through traffic and create more green spaces and meeting places. The design of the superblocks is based on the model of the "Superilles" in Barcelona, which are considered a successful redesign of urban space.

In Wilhelmshaven, the installation of mobile gardens is seen as part of a comprehensive initiative to redesign and ecologically enhance urban open spaces. Two models of mobile gardens were set up to respond specifically to local climatic challenges while creating outdoor social meeting places. The special feature there: due to the salty sea air, particularly robust systems had to be developed.

Flexible and easy-care solution

MobiGa systems are easy to implement and require minimal maintenance, making them ideal for public spaces. Their flexibility allows for temporary or permanent use, depending on requirements. Cities such as Frankfurt, Chemnitz, and Gelsenkirchen have rented the gardens for 2024, while Neustadt Wstr. and Suhl have permanently integrated them into their urban development. These cities are now benefiting from the innovative greening and the positive effects on the urban climate and biodiversity.

A building block in the fight against climate change

The mobile gardens help purify the air and provide habitats for urban wildlife. With their diverse design options and technical features such as solar-powered irrigation systems, they offer an innovative solution to the challenges faced by modern cities. In addition to enriching the cityscape with greenery, they provide practical seating for a pleasant rest. MobiGa invites other cities and municipalities to consider these sustainable and flexible gardens as part of their urban development strategy.
